Our Story: How It All Began

I-MED Pharma dates-back to 1989, when Dr. Ilan Hofmann, PhD in biochemistry, and Maureen Blanchard opened a small office in Montreal under the name of Domilens Canada Inc. (a subsidiary of the Lyon, France-based, Laboratoires Domilens). They then grew Domilens Canada Inc. into a fully independent, wholly-owned Canadian company, which was renamed I-MED Pharma Inc. in 1994.

  • Dr. Hofmann first started doing research on Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Devices in the late seventies which lead to the launch of the first ophthalmic viscoelastic device (OVD) called Healon®, This OVD revolutionized cataract surgery. During that time, he was also developing Intraocular lenses (IOLs) and the first hyaluronan eye drops for humans. I-MED Animal Health, a subsidiary of I-MED Pharma, came about after requests from veterinary ophthalmologists for products that were originally developed for humans to assist them in treating their animal patients. It became clear that many animals had similar pathologies, such as cataracts, dry eye, glaucoma, etc. to those seen in humans.
  • In the mid-1980’s, after discussing with various veterinary ophthalmologists, Dr. Hofmann, with the guidance of Dr. Jacques Gaiddon, a French veterinary ophthalmologist conceived and commercialized the first IOL specifically designed for dogs. Shortly thereafter, veterinary OVDs and hyaluronan eye drops were adapted from the human products by I-MED Animal Health to provide solutions specifically designed for animals. The first PMMA IOLs for veterinary use later led to the design and launch of the first foldable hydrophilic and fully preloaded hydrophobic acrylic IOLs, Capsular Tension Rings (CTRs) and single-use injectors for IOLs, as well as various I-DROP® VET products for the treatment of dry eye disease along with many other products by I-MED Animal Health.
  • In 2017, Dr. Ilan Hofmann, transitioned from President and CEO of I-MED Pharma to Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer of the company. This allows him to focus his attention on the research & development and commercialization of new products for both human and veterinary patients, the backbone, and the future of our company. Daniel Hofmann, MBA, BSc in biochemistry, was appointed CEO and remains focused on the continued growth and expansion of the company, through both product development and global distribution partnerships. Now, I-MED Animal Health products can be found in over 20 countries worldwide.
